In early 2020, during the height of the global COVID19 crisis, a secret test run of the LHC ran into trouble. The first few black holes only lasted for such a short duration that one could have said they simply blinked in and out of existence. The next few trillion black holes similarly flickered in and out of existence in rapid succession.

None of the nine scientists working in the dead of that fateful night imagined that an actual Grant Point would crystallize around the point of collision. The AI had been unable to account for the inexplicable quantum flicker from so many of the unreal little things happening in such close proximity. None of the simulation runs had predicted anything close to this level of manic quantum activity.

What happened next has been a topic of great interest to historians and religious groups around the world. The details are impossible to know, of course, but at least two things happened nearly at once. First, there was a rupture in space time for the briefest of seconds, long enough to allow the underlying void to surge to the foreground like a lightning strike. And second, as we now know, the scientists in attendance must have had enough attention and focus on the unfolding events to cause a Grant Point with their collective consciousness.

Just as the theory predicted, waves of artificial reality began to emanate from the newly formed Grant Point almost immediately. It would be over 50 years before a team of cognitive quantum physicists would figure out how to safely control the waves, and would lay the foundations for reality modification as a science. Because the physicists were also trained masters in a particularly esoteric form of ancient Tibetan meditation, they were able to actually complete building the quantum dam around the Grant Point, what we today call Grant Shell One.

They were able to establish and perfectly stabilize a psychic link with that first Grant Point, which was the beginning of the end of everything we knew about reality.

In current timelines, we take it for granted that there are infinite realities. Over 100 years ago, we finally also conquered sleep. Today, nearly everyone uses artificial sleep, and many who decide to experience the old fashioned way of sleeping often simply wake up to a conveniently different reality. When traveling back and forth between realities became possible, the idea of time and space lost meaning entirely, and global culture changed almost overnight.

Welcome to Artificial Reality.
